Just had an accident?
Take a breath. Here's exactly what to do.

These steps will protect you legally, keep you safe, and get your car taken care of — in that order. We're here when you're ready.

Step by step

Do these things, in this order.

You don't have to remember everything right now. Work through these one at a time.

  1. Step 1:

    Make sure everyone is safe.

Move away from traffic if you can do so safely. If your vehicle is driveable and creates a hazard where it stopped, move it to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights.

  2. Step 2:

    Call police if required.

In BC, you are required to report a collision to police if:

    • Anyone is injured or killed
    • A driver appears impaired
    • A vehicle involved in the crash does not stop (hit and run)
    • There is significant property damage

For minor collisions that don't meet these conditions, you don't need to wait for police — proceed to reporting with ICBC (Step 5).

  3. Step 3:

    Document the scene.

Before vehicles are moved (if safe to do so), take photos of:

    • The position of all vehicles involved
    • Visible damage to all vehicles
    • Licence plates of all involved vehicles
    • The road, intersection, skid marks, or conditions that may be relevant
    • Any traffic signs or signals in view
    • Your own damage, close up

More documentation is always better than less. You can't go back once the scene is cleared.

  4. Step 4:

    Exchange information.

With every other driver involved, exchange:

    • Full name and contact information
    • Driver's licence number
    • ICBC policy number (on your pink slip, or in the ICBC app)
    • Licence plate number
    • Vehicle make, model, and year

If there are witnesses who stopped, ask for their name and phone number. You don't need a statement on the spot — just contact information.

  5. Step 5:

    Report to ICBC.

You are required to report any collision involving another vehicle — or any collision causing injury — to ICBC within a reasonable time. The sooner you report, the better.

    How to report:

    • Online: icbc.com (24/7, recommended for straightforward claims)
    • By phone: 1-800-910-4222 (24/7)
    • ICBC app: Report and manage your claim from your phone

When you report, ICBC will give you a claim number. Write it down. You'll need it to start your repair.

  6. Step 6:

Choose your repair shop and contact us.

Once you have your claim number, call or message us. ICBC's list of shops is a suggestion, not a rule — the choice of where your car is repaired belongs to you.

We'll take it from here: the estimate, the adjuster communication, the supplements, the repair, the billing. You pick up a restored vehicle at the end.

Common questions

Questions we hear after every accident.

Do I need to call the police after a car accident in BC?

In BC, you must report a collision to police if anyone is injured or killed, a driver appears impaired, a vehicle doesn't stop (hit and run), or there is significant property damage. For minor collisions that don't meet these conditions, you report directly to ICBC. Reporting to police and reporting to ICBC are two separate steps.

Do I have to use the shop ICBC recommends?

No. ICBC provides a list of accredited repair facilities, but the choice of where your car is repaired belongs to you. You can choose any accredited shop — including Morrey Autobody & Glass.

How do I start an ICBC claim?

You can report online at icbc.com (24/7), by phone at 1-800-910-4222 (24/7), or through the ICBC app. You'll receive a claim number — once you have it, contact us and we'll take it from there.

Is towing covered by my ICBC claim?

Towing is covered under most ICBC claims for accident-related damage. We'll confirm the details with your adjuster when you contact us.
