Just had an accident?
Take a breath. Here's exactly what to do.
These steps will protect you legally, keep you safe, and get your car taken care of — in that order. We're here when you're ready.
Step by step
Do these things, in this order.
You don't have to remember everything right now. Work through these one at a time.
- Step 1:
Make sure everyone is safe.
Move away from traffic if you can do so safely. If your vehicle is driveable and creates a hazard where it stopped, move it to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights.
- Step 2:
Call police if required.
In BC, you are required to report a collision to police if:
- Anyone is injured or killed
- A driver appears impaired
- A vehicle involved in the crash does not stop (hit and run)
- There is significant property damage
For minor collisions that don't meet these conditions, you don't need to wait for police — proceed to reporting with ICBC (Step 5).
- Step 3:
Document the scene.
Before vehicles are moved (if safe to do so), take photos of:
- The position of all vehicles involved
- Visible damage to all vehicles
- Licence plates of all involved vehicles
- The road, intersection, skid marks, or conditions that may be relevant
- Any traffic signs or signals in view
- Your own damage, close up
More documentation is always better than less. You can't go back once the scene is cleared.
- Step 4:
Exchange information.
With every other driver involved, exchange:
- Full name and contact information
- Driver's licence number
- ICBC policy number (on your pink slip, or in the ICBC app)
- Licence plate number
- Vehicle make, model, and year
If there are witnesses who stopped, ask for their name and phone number. You don't need a statement on the spot — just contact information.
- Step 5:
Report to ICBC.
You are required to report any collision involving another vehicle — or any collision causing injury — to ICBC within a reasonable time. The sooner you report, the better.
How to report:
- Online: icbc.com (24/7, recommended for straightforward claims)
- By phone: 1-800-910-4222 (24/7)
- ICBC app: Report and manage your claim from your phone
When you report, ICBC will give you a claim number. Write it down. You'll need it to start your repair.
- Step 6:
Choose your repair shop and contact us.
Once you have your claim number, call or message us. ICBC's list of shops is a suggestion, not a rule — the choice of where your car is repaired belongs to you.
We'll take it from here: the estimate, the adjuster communication, the supplements, the repair, the billing. You pick up a restored vehicle at the end.
